Slicing Poetry

I'm slicing with the Two Writing Teachers community today.  It's the first Tuesday slice after the MARCH SLICE OF LIFE CHALLENGE. How are you doing?
Thanks to Stacey, Tara, Anna, Betsy, Dana, Kathleen, Beth, and Deb, we keep going!

It's also April, poetry month, and I'm attempting to write a poem every day, sometimes taking someone else's challenge, sometimes finding inspiration myself.  I'll take a break later in the week for a short trip, then will continue on.

Be sure to go here to Penny Klosterman's post at A Penny And Her Jots  for line number five of Irene Latham's Progressive Poem.

My writing since the end of the Slice of Life challenge has consisted of a few book reviews and messing around with words, for POETRY. I've been reading poetry, hoping to learn and grow as a poet, but being messy doing it is accurate.

I've completed a challenge for another blogger today, but in between revising it, I've tried more than one topic, and rejected more than one, too. In between that writing, I've rearranged clothes, winter to spring, tried to make a list for a trip to see my son, daughter-in-law and grandson this Thursday. My mind is on finishing tasks before the trip, deciding what to pack, that terrible time when you realize that you cannot take your entire closet! I am impatient, do not like waiting for a trip. I want to just GO!
I have April's poem # 5 to share, and a challenge for you if you'd like. I did this challenge a couple of years ago and don't remember from whose blog I got it. It is simply to write a poem that includes at least one set of homonyms, if not more. My poem is a little silly, but I tried to hold a story line. Can you find the homonyms?

Homonym Romance

Come here, oh Cinderella.
I love to hear you sing,
like birds who a cappella,
we all await the spring.

Their song awakens tiny buds.
See there the green, green bed.
Now we must wish for rainy nights.
They’re waiting to be fed.

Do not allow the aisle to pull
you to a match that magic made.
We’ll travel to a special isle.
I’ll love you. That will never fade.

  1. Ah fun! I admire you. You push yourself to places I don't go. Story, rhyme and homonym. And planning for a trip. Wow!

  2. I understand wanting to just go. And taking the whole closet. I don't like narrowing choices to finality when packing...I always feel wishy washy near the final moments of choice. Enjoy your trip and I will try your homonym challenge...taking poetry to a whole different level! Thanks for the challenge Linda!

  3. Took two readings but I found the homonyms. Fun! I always set out packing lightly and then panic at the last minute and put in extra no matter how many times I tell myself that there has to be a Marshall's nearby.

  5. "like birds who a cappella"
I love the sound of this!

What fun, Linda...and I had to read twice to find them. They were nestled right into the love song. xx

  7. Beautiful writing, Linda!
We had a homonym wall in first grade. Unfortunately, I haven't had enough recent practice to pick out all of the homonyms in this poem at first glance, Linda.

  8. I'm packing too for a short trip. Trying to keep it to minimal. (I said, I'm trying. Didn't say I succeeded. Yet) The most important thing is to pack the documents and money. :)

  10. I can certainly understand about wanting to be at your destination. Sometimes it seems that the day to leave will never arrive. Really clever use of homonyms in the poem. I was able to fine them in each stanza.

  11. Nice use of homonyms! I am a bit shy with poetry. I will write it in my journal but not sharing it yet! I may have to play with this idea just for the fun of it.
Have fun on your trip! Thursday is almost here!

    1. No, there are only three, Maureen. If I'd tried for more I might have run out of time. But there are long, long lists to be found on the internet! Thanks!

  14. Ahhh the next challenge Linda. How important that is to stay connected to life. I remember taking up the April poem a day challenge... I loved it but so far I haven't been back for another... So glad you are always there for me, no matter what else keeps you challenged.

    1. And I feel you there, too, Bonnie. Yes, I want the connections, and value them. Some day we all do need a long weekend together for sure! I'm taking it easy this April, doing what I feel like each day, and skipping a few. I did Laura Shovan's poem challenge in Feb. & am kind of tired. Thanks, Friend!

  17. I had to read it twice. So clever, Linda. Thanks for the reminder about the progressive poem. It's been such a busy day that I haven't even checked on line 5. Have a great trip. I'm off for a quick visit to see my sister Soon. Even though I'm not subbing this week, the days fill up anyway.
