Tuesday - New Point of View?

I'm slicing with the Two Writing Teachers community today. It's always a pleasure to read what everyone writes about their lives.

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”
― Abraham Lincoln

I've been reading, sharing and writing more than once lately about point of view. It seems important "all" the time, yet especially this election year. But no, this is not about the election, but about my companion this Labor Day weekend. My daughter's family just adopted a new dog from a cattle dog rescue site last week, and they had previously promised to keep a friend's dog, Lloyd, a sweet and older Cardigan Welsh Corgi. It wasn't a good time for them to have another dog while their new one was visiting. (There's a three week trial visit.) So, you know what's coming. I agreed to have Lloyd for the weekend. He is quiet and sweet and I thought it would be nice to see if I'd like another dog in my life. My husband and I had three dogs in our married life: a dalmatian named Sophie, an Old English Sheepdog named Bentley and a poodle/Jack Russell terrier mix named Timmy. All were wonderful dogs, and I'm not even mentioning the dogs my grown children had that we kept on occasion through the years. We also had a cat named Macavity (Max) and for a lot of years I had a horse stabled in the country-Mariah. I love animals, and miss them in my life.

What was I reminded of? Dogs, even with a stranger, only want to love. As you will see from the pictures, Lloyd is too small to jump up on a sofa to sit by me, so when I sat down on the floor or outside on a step close to him, he moved right over, putting his head on my lap, sometimes my shoe, and stayed! He followed me most of the time, watching to see what was up, a treat, a walk? And he made me slow down, even though I "thought" I already knew about slowing down to be sure not to miss something. When we walked, he paused to sniff, so I paused to look. I spotted more birds, different flowers, thinking I'd seen them all in my neighborhood, and a baby squirrel peeking down from a low tree limb. Lloyd made a weekend sweet for me, and I am grateful.
               Serendipity, right?

  1. "Dogs ... only want to love." What could be more wonderful. We have a cat, that we love like a dog. Glad you had Lloyd and his love this weekend.

    1. It was a nice, "slow" weekend, Julieanne. I know that you and others needed the break, too. Have a great week!

  2. I thought by the end of the post you were going to announce that you've decided to get a dog, Linda. If anyone could change your point of view about dog ownership it seems it would be this cutie. Thanks for sharing your weekend with Lloyd. =)

    2. Ha! Yes, I am looking, Bridget & Kristi! I'm headed for a poetry workshop next week, so may get more serious later in the fall. I imagine just the right one will appear! Thanks for the push!

  3. Great pictures and how content he looks. Animals ask so little but give so much.

  4. Love your quote from Lincoln and it must have been nice to dog sit. Another pet seems like such a commitment at my age but I wouldn't mind having a temporary dog.

    1. It is a commitment, perhaps why I've waited, but I do have backup from my daughter and family. I'll keep looking. Thanks, Bernadette!

  5. What a wonderful weekend. Lloyd sounds like a sweet dog. I don't have a dog myself, but their unconditional, unselfish love must be the best reason to have one.

  7. Ahhh I'm remembering my dogs back at our family home. I couldn't imagine a life without a dog. I would be deep in thought as you are now Linda. It seems to get harder to take on a dog as you get older. Just me, maybe...

    1. It is a big decision, mostly because I don't want to feel guilty every time I leave. I am thinking, as you wrote. Thanks, Bonnie.

  8. It is so true that dogs slow us down. We have a 3 year old Havanese. We got as our boys were entering adolescence. I wanted her to slow us down, connect around a common thing and have something bring us together at a time when life would be pulling us in different directions. She is perfect and does it all!! We connect around her every day --pure joy!! Thank you for reminding me.
Glad to be back and connecting with you

    1. He did seem right at home, but is a mild-mannered older dog, so rest & treats, pats & a short walk suited him fine. Thanks, Ramona.

  15. Lloyd looks like a sweet dog. I don't think I could live without a dog in my life. Charlie is my constant companion. And yes, only there for love. Charlie is a schnoodle, part schnauzer, part poodle. I highly recommend the poodle mix.
