Life By The Numbers

Join us on Tuesdays with the Two Writing Teachers and others who post.

  1. One thing checked off the list, applied for TSA pre-check. It was fun to be at the airport without hurrying. I had my favorite iced chai, browsed at the bookstore, looked at some of the galleries all before my appointment.
  2. Two days from now begins the Denver Public Library Sale. There are thousands of books to browse, but I usually stick to kids' books and poetry, sometimes biography/memoir.                                                                                                                                Two weeks from today is Independence Day. I have a new book that I imagine everyone loving. It's Blue Sky White Stars by Sarvinder Naberhaus, illustrated by Kadir Nelson. I haven't reviewed it yet, but it is gorgeous, a tribute to the American flag.
  3. Three poems have been written these recent three days! Now to return to them to see what can be better.
  4.      Four days after Independence Day, I'll be on my way to the beach. Yep, I'm counting down!
  5. The number of books I bought last week when I visited my favorite Indie bookstore, The Tattered Cover. Yes, I held it to five, but sat and read at least another five picture books while I was there.
  6. Guessing, but I think I've worked about six hours in the garden since Saturday, cutting back plants that shouldn't be where they've moved, deadheading and of course, looking for bindweed! It truly is like the Energizer Bunny, just keeps going (growing)!
  7. I have seven things I must do on Tuesday because Wednesday is the sale and a dinner party and Thursday is the bookstore: renew two things, pay two bills, grocery shop, pick up a dress from the alterations shop, write one poem, work on another piece I'm writing, dust. Notice that dusting is at the end!
An Aristotle quote:  "All human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsions, habit, reason, passion and desire." Did I make the connections in number seven?

  4. Playful number post. Your "seven things I must do" made me think of "six impossible things before breakfast" and I hope that as you cross things off from your to-do-list you have some magical moments along the way.

  5. Lots going on in your life. Retirement seems to fill our lives with so much busyness. Glad that you taking time out of retirement for going to the beach!

  7. I enjoyed reading this and appreciate the constraint due to numbers. We do number our lives. I took a look at Blue Sky White Stars. Wow. Thank you for mentioning it. A book I would like to add to unit on color--well at least that is what I am thinking having only previewed it. Kadir Nelson's art work is stunning.

I like the way your writing weaves and ducks into and out of a field of numbers. Enjoy the beach.

    1. Thanks, Mary Ann. Kadir Nelson's ideas of color is something to study, and perhaps a broad look at more than this one. It's going to be a new favorite of mine. Thanks, the beach certainly beckons!

  8. You are busy! I did my shopping because a tropical storm is on the way. Now to write my post and work on a poem or two. I wish we could meet for coffee and share our poems.

  10. Isn't bindweed amazing? The leaves are a really pretty shape, but it just takes over in no time at all! I pull it out pretty much every single day!

  11. I like how you collected memories via numbers. And I have to ask or I'm off to google - bindweed? I have an annoying weed that appears every year in my flower boxes...

    1. I wrote more about it here, Mandy: http://www.teacherdance.org/search?q=bindweed There are pictures, but if you read the comments, you'll see it's called various names. There's also a very sticky messy weed called chickweed. You can find pics on the web. Thanks, and good luck finding "your" weed.

  12. Linda, life is a series of to dos mixed with passion and desires. I know that your beach holiday will be filled with the latter. I checked out the book you mentioned. Kadir Nelson is one of my favorite illustrators. Will you send me your review when you write it please?

  13. Somehow I missed this post and it's so fun! My favorite those 5 books you picked up at The Tattered Cover. We managed to stop by years ago when we used to go to Snow Mountain Ranch when we lived in Houston. I still have happy memories of that bookstore. Enjoy counting down to your beach time! Happy vacationing!
