As many of you know, I have been opening boxes of memorabilia from years of family collecting, stored in attics and basements. And then, my husband took it to save, and now I have moved, am continuing to comb through everything with the anticipation of an estate sale in order to find a new way of living, still with numerous special things from my past, but with the inspiration to live a little more lightly! I have moved, have been in my new home nearly a week, and the word of the day is "boxes" and "finding the correct light switch". The days and nights have gone well, and I am looking forward to more.
Among many lovely little pieces of the past, I found a beautiful old book copyrighted 1910, titled Stevenson on Friendship. It includes short quotations and essays of the thoughts of different kinds of friendship, with people, nature, various concepts like industry. Robert Louis Stevenson is musing about all these things, seeming to share his thoughts as from his journal. It is something I wanted to share with you all. Because Stevenson is such a sentimental writer, the words are quite poetic, and I love especially one where he speaks about the stars. I found the passage here at Google books which I discovered is from a book by Stevenson titled Will O' The Mill.

How wonderful to rediscover old treasures! And how time consuming and emotional all the sifting you're doing... so easy to just let things accumulate; it's the sorting that hard. The passage reminds me of It's A Wonderful Life. Love that sentiment so much. Love to you, Linda!
ReplyDeleteThank you Irene. There are some delightful old things, but I'm keeping just a few. Happy Holidays!
DeleteYou're finding some wonderful treasures in those boxes (and I'm surprised you have the time and energy to blog despite just having moved)!
ReplyDeleteWonderful Stevenson excerpt -- I've been fascinated with him for awhile because of his Hawaii connections :).
Thank you Jama. I'll be taking some time off soon. I didn't know about the Hawaii connections-will look it up.
DeleteWhat a find! I love Stevenson - since "A Child's Garden of Verses" when as a young girl my mom gave me an old copy.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a keeper for a cold winter's day and a cup of hot chocolate...with peppermint!
Yes, cocoa time is coming! Thanks Donna!
DeleteI love old books - works of art! I hope your sorting goes well, Linda - and your unboxing, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tara, will have to push Christmas in there too!
DeleteWhat a treasure, Linda! Thanks for sharing not only the words, but the beautiful text done in the old-fashioned style.
ReplyDeleteViolet N.
You're welcome Violet. It is a lovely discovery, I agree.
DeleteWhat a lovely find. I've copied down the quote so I can keep it with me. I think today I may need to read some Stevenson today!
ReplyDeleteThe opening lines is a treasure in itself, I agree. I don't even know about this book. It seems very very beautiful. Will look for it soonest. :)
