#PoetryFriday - Poems and Songs

Jan Godown Annino hosts our Poetry Friday today HERE at Bookseed Studio with a challenge today to "SING". She's "singing" with Amanda Gorman this time, a tune-filled post! Thanks, Jan!

More postcard hugs and a snowy song for Jan! I read on the list that Jan called for music and thought Tuesday and Wednesday about what I could "sing" about that would be "approved". Then, shoveling on Wednesday morning, I kept hearing the scrape back and forth of the snow shovel and had an idea. Sing along if you wish! Thanks for the idea, Jan!

The ALA awards last Monday are always exciting, and even more exciting this year is that two Poetry Friday people won awards! Congratulations to Irene Latham, with Karim Shamsi-Basha & Yuko Shimizu, whose book, The Cat Man of Aleppo, won a Caldecott Honor. Also, Congratulations to Laura Shovan, with Saadia Faruqi , whose book, A Place At The Table, was named a Sydney Taylor Notable book. Both books are very special!

And, perhaps the last of those awesome postcard hugs. It's nearly February!

It's a good thing to listen to Becky Herzog's advice for "quiet" and she's celebrating music, too!
A Quiet morning
reflection on a new year
music to my ears

Margaret invites me for a visit to her beloved bayou and a blue heron, peace most always there!

On wingbeats of blue
heron rises unstatued
heralding the new

Robyn's gift shares an attitude all might take in "Happy Days".

The years pass on, each one brings
Its share of joys and sorrows;
But may this new one only hold
Bright days and fair tomorrows

plus

new feeder
tiny chickadees
come first

(Does she know I have a new feeder? I've waited and waited and finally after about a week, some chickadees and sparrows came. Then, Tuesday, my first at the suet, a downy redpecker!

Last, Carol V's with a sweet note, not shared, and a beauty of a wider card with poem.

upon the lake
silverdrops dance
as a new year arises
breathe in
     winter's freshness
exhale earth's frostbitten bite.
                   Evolve!

Happy New Year Everyone! May our February be sweet with lots of red and chocolate!

  1. Linda, thank you for mentioning my poetry postcard. I was toying around with evolve as my one word but I moved to begin since it has such significance for me this year. I am also celebrating the postcards from Robyn and Becky this week and added in one from you with a lovely design. I do like how you channeled Jan's thoughts and created an image poem that sings of winter. I would like to capture your Winter Notes image poem for my winter gallery. Please let me know if you would be interested in offering this one.

  4. What a fabulous collection. I loved your 'scraping out a winter tune' - because scraping is a gritty word for a snow shovel sound, but it also resonates for music. Sometimes our songs are raspy and require effort - but sing anyway!

  6. Linda, your postcard poems are concise delights. They do indeed sing. I particularly enjoyed your winter notes as it evoked memories of my first ever morning in the US all those years ago. When we woke to snow and I got to help clear the pavement of my friend's house.

  8. Snow shovel singing...hmmmm picture book? I just got Becky's postcard too. I love how she Made them. What a great idea that I'm totally going to steal--erm, emulate! I am in the process of making our shovels ready for Sunday and Monday (this means finding them). We have winter weather coming and I'm excited! Happy Poetry Friday.

  13. Thanks for featuring the new year's cards. I got Becky's this week and want to know how she made them. I do wish for snow on occasion but I don't think I would like shoveling much. Glad you could find a sweet tune to make the task easier.
