Leafy Lines

The Slices of Life are hosted each Tuesday by Ruth and Stacey at their marvelous blog, Two Writing Teachers.  Come read some slices of everyone's lives.

Observations Around - October 2013

Trees spread their prints--

Their leafy spores lie like tablecloths,

Crispy crimson stays with us a while,

alongside translucent sunny evidence
of goodbyes.

Till next year…

  1. Your title got me thinking you were writing about the future....and then I noticed your lovely photos were of this season's beauty. I "went away" but your message "haunted me." I get it. Enjoy it today, but realize the special beauty of this season will be back, but not until next year!

    1. Thanks Anita. I am writing about the future, and more, too. You did 'get it'.

  4. The poem and pictures make me stand still quietly until the last frame with the path leading to a gate. It may not be so but I feel that you had the picture with the path before the other photos.

    1. I think I've taken more than one photo of that path, Terje. You are so perceptive! It's a favorite view at my home, & now of course I won't see it again since I'm moving. Thank you.

  5. I was just wondering, this afternoon, as I walked up and down my block with Izzy, what fall looks like in other parts of the country since I've only lived as far north as RI as far west as PA and as far south as DC. Thanks for the visuals. Apparently fall is stunning in CO too!

    1. How can we not take the pictures, Stacey? I have more & more. When I traveled to Boston with students at this time of year we could not stop picking up leaves-so gorgeous for you in the east too.

  6. Crispy crimson...love that line. Our leaves are gone in the midwest. I seems too early. xo

  8. Beautiful pictures with beautiful words accompanying them. I'm sure the fall is bittersweet this year since you are moving--maybe not far, but away from here. Next year you'll find new inspiration, I'm sure.

    1. You are sweet to say that Deb. Yes, every time I look, I say, remember, remember. It's been a very lovely home, and totally right for us for a long time.

  9. This is beautiful, Linda. Like Robert Frost beautiful (reminiscent of Nothing Gold Can Stay).

I am curious about your process for writing this poem. Did you craft then photograph or photograph then craft? Do your photos remain digital while you craft? How do you make it all fit together so perfectly? It is enchanting and haunting at the same time.

    1. Thank you so much, Christy. I actually love, & often notice, the way trees seem to leave a print when dropping their leaves, like placing wild mushrooms on black paper & gaining what is called a 'spore' print. They do drop their spores. So I started with that line, took pictures, then also noticed that some trees hold their leaves, like that red one, and some of the aspen still hold some, but the path is golden too. All the rest just came together. (Hope that's not more than you wanted.)

  10. Love it! Simply beautiful! This is a time of year I have to remind myself while driving not to veer off into a field or something as I try to see it all.

    1. I know, I know. I stopped to take a photo of a cloud today. The sky seems bluer, the clouds are awesome. Thanks, Ruth.

  11. Beautiful. My favorite line was "alongside translucent sunny evidence." Your photos are glorious. We don't get much color down south, so I love seeing pictures.

    1. As I've said so often, it is a beauty of a time. We have snow forecast later in the week, so my picture taking might end soon of this autumn. Thanks, Margaret.

    1. You are welcome. As I write, it is snowing here in Denver. I'm so happy I took the photos for it will be all gone after tonight. Good to capture!
