A Slice of Life We Don't Want

I'm slicing with the Two Writing Teachers community today. It's always a pleasure to read what everyone writes about their lives.

One part (slice) of my life that is sometimes challenging is that I am alone. I do miss my husband for so, so many reasons, and one of those ways that I miss him is in our conversations. When you live with someone for a long time, you become used to the give and take of words, the usual and the important. We ask for each other's opinions, share articles read, plan and worry about the future--together! So, in this election, this election I find akin to Alice falling down the rabbit hole into something bizarre and unexpected, I want to turn to someone to say the following: Did you just hear that? That's wrong. And that; he doesn't know the facts! Or-she could have said more there. And, have you read ________ here, or here? So, I hope you understand that this is brief and I will share one thing that I've shared already on FB, and with friends, because I have no one at home to pat me on the back when I want to go kick the wall in frustration, or to tell me that everything will be all right!

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." -Hermann Göring, Nazi military leader (12 Jan 1893-1946)

  1. Oh Linda. I fear for us and can't wait for this election to be over. While you had to watch that debate alone, I believe you had friends all over the country thinking the same thing you were. All I can say is, think and vote, please.

    1. Thank you for this, Julianne. I too am looking forward to this madness passing, and hoping that all will be "all right". I certainly will vote!

  2. It is a difficult time, and so puzzling for me. My husband tended to fast forward through some of the responses because he just couldn't bear to listen. I'm offering you a virtual pat on the back and my promise that I'll be in the ballot box casing my vote in November.

    1. Oh, thanks for the 'pat', Ramona. Good to hear about the voting. Staying home out of frustration isn't a good idea!

  3. oops - fingers got out of control on previous comment! What I meant to say was I was thinking of you during the entire circus last night. Do Not Fear - You Are Not Alone! Surely the people of this country will make the right choice!

    1. I am hoping, know that I'm not alone in this outer world, but last night was quite the frustrating time! Thank you, Jim!

  4. We can only hope that people will use their heads and think seriously about who is best for our country. It is difficult when so many empty promises are made. It is going to be an interesting next four years.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly! And yes, these next years are some to watch too, and to hold people accountable. Thanks!

  5. I recently read that quote and it scared the pants of me. That being said, I continue to trust in the basic goodness of our fellow citizens.

    1. I do too, Bernadette, but there are many angry people out there, so will try to do all I can to make this election a victory for everyone.

  6. I'm so glad to read your words, Linda. I'm right there with you on the disbelief and fear of what might be. The quote you shared is chilling, but I, like the commenter above, Bernadette, believe reason and civility will prevail.

  7. Hope, common sense, thoughtfulness, and kindness are my friends. I can't worry about what might be. (I am, however, volunteering at least two hours a week for a positive result!)

  9. The quote really sums everything up, doesn't it? I'm so sorry for the loss of your hubby. I'm sending prayers and positive vibes your way.

  10. Scary quote! My husband and I are not really talking much about the election. I am sporting a Stronger Together bumper sticker while he thinks we have no real choice. Really? The choice to me is so clear. But we're not going to talk about it.

  11. Talking back to the TV just isn't the same as the conversations my husband and I would have had... I miss that, too. The quote is truly scary. I hope everyone pays attention and votes.

  12. Your words are so true for so many of us, Linda. I keep hoping I'll wake up and it will still be 2014 and all of this will have been a bad dream. Unfortunately, we both know that won't happen. Oh my....

    1. I'm going to keep trying to help in ways that I can. And yes, I know it's not a bad dream, except one during the day! Thanks, Jennifer.

  13. Ah, Linda. This election season has really brought me to despair...mainly because of the children, and what they are hearing and seeing. That really pains me...

    1. I know, and keep wondering how teachers can possibly "do" this what is supposed to be an exciting time in our country. I'm so sorry it has turned out this way. Thanks for sharing your concern, Tara.
