#SOL17 - Sixteen of Thirty-One - The Us We Used To Be

I'm slicing with the Two Writing Teachers community for Day Sixteen of Thirty-One of the Slice of Life Challenge in March.  Thank you, Stacey, Beth, Deb, Betsy, Lanny, Kathleen, Lisa, and Melanie.

It's a particularly nostalgic week for me because I'm completing the sale of our family cabin, one we bought in the early 80's. Most of these pictures are very early, my son and daughter are about six and ten. The cabin is a leasehold, meaning we rented the land in a national forest from the government and own the cabin. The people we bought it from built it over several summers, and we added a loft for sleeping and some different furniture, etc. It is a primitive cabin. We hauled our own water, used candles and oil lamps, bathed in an old washtub with heated water from a huge teapot if we were there longer than a weekend and I cooked on what is called a sheepherder's wood stove. It all worked fine, and the best was exploring the woods, climbing a few nearby, not-too-high mountains, and playing in streams. I will miss going but have sold it to a young family who are loving it all over again and that makes me happy.

Yes, I wore overalls and loved them. My hair curls every
which way without a blow dryer.
Nathan and friends found a mysterious structure when exploring and
used it as a hideout!

Climbing nearby rocks meant good challenges.

Yes, we had to have a swing.

And there was an outhouse of course. It was used
for its real purpose, but also for playing hide and seek!

Stream fun, but cold!

Sarah had her own "reading rock" in the meadow.

It was always a joyful time being in the cabin, in the forest. I am glad we jumped at the chance to be this kind of "us" in part of our lives.

  1. This whole post is amazing! I love the pictures! These must be the most special memories you could have made and though I'm sad that you are saying goodbye to this cabin, I am also, like you, happy that you're giving another family the opportunity to make these priceless memories as well. Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. You know, I may still have one pair in my costume box, Terje. I wore them sometimes when I dressed as a hobo clown for our school's Halloween party. Thanks for asking!

  7. We don't hear enough about authentic outdoor time these days; I wonder how many folks would feel comfortable living that primitively on vacation? Sounds simply wonderful; I can almost feel the sunlight and breath that pine-scented air through this post!
