SOLC17 26/31 - "SLICING"

SOLC #21/31 -
I'm slicing with the Two Writing Teachers community on Day Twenty-Six of Thirty-One of the Slice of Life Challenge in March.  Thank you Stacey, Beth, Deb, Betsy, Lanny, Kathleen, Lisa, and Melanie.

Perhaps someone has written about this topic, I'm not sure. I was playing around with what to share today and thought I would see what I could brainstorm about "slices".

I'll draw for my giveaway last Wednesday later in the day and notify the winner!

The first definition by Merriam-Webster "
  1. a :  a thin flat piece cut from somethingb :  a wedge-shaped piece (as of pie or cake)

There are:

FOOD
slices of different kinds of meat
and cheese
apples and pears,
bread, cake and pie
           and remember
"The owl and the pussycat 'dined upon mince/and slices of quince/which they ate with a runcible spoon'.

"Slices" aren't always eaten.

There are:

Slices of life (of course)
a slice in tennis
a slice of school life
a furrow slice of earth
lightning slices the air
Elsie adds: a slice in golf!

from Joanne: My research says these are discontinued but led to Sierra Mist.

from Wendy: A thin slice of moon

from Diane - memories of childhood- a big slice of watermelon

Sayings:
no matter how you slice it
slice and dice
when you slice the truth too thin, you deceive
no matter how thin you slice it, it's still baloney
greatest thing since sliced bread
from Tara: "I am not interested in slice of life, what I want is a slice of the imagination." Carlos Fuentes
from Alice: "Robert Frost's "Blue-Butterfly Day." The last line: "Where wheels have freshly sliced the April mire."

Can you think of any more?

  2. Slices aren't always eaten,
    they are nibbled,
    chewed, discussed,
    enjoyed, often with a side
    of surprise, joy, and possibly
    sadness and surely, compassion.
    We train our microscope towards
    a single small moment
    in hopes it transforms into
a telescope of the larger human experience.
    Go on, then.
    Nibble away.

  4. Is it any wonder English is so difficult to learn? Look at all the ways one word can be used. I think there might be a slice in golf too. My favorite slice has to be coconut cream pie after a slice of pizza.

  9. What a great idea, Linda! You sent me scurrying to my quotes notebook, and this is what I found:
"I am not interested in slice of life, what I want is a slice of the imagination." Carlos Fuentes
Your SOL today definitely fits the bill!

  10. Linda this was a great slice today! I love the way it forms a bit of a poem. Slice is Slice is also a line of fruit-flavored soft drinks ( not sure if it is still made)

Now you have me wondering about words - love it!

  13. Thanks for a fun and creative look at what each of us are doing this week. This saying certainly doesn't apply to what we've got going on with the SOLSC, but I can't help but think of the ol' "No matter how you slice it, it's still baloney!" Thanks for a fun post.

  15. Wow....you just expanded my view of one little word. It carries much for a word that can mean only a portion, but the size may vary. This was a fun, playful post. My mind is furiously working but coming up empty.

  16. Love it!!
Don't forget slice of watermelon. One of the fun memories of childhood- a big slice of watermelon, cut from a long oval watermelon, filled with seeds for spitting at brothers! Took two hands to hold, left juice dripping from your chin and your hands, such a treat on a muggy summer day.

  17. Love all the angles of your writing on "slice." I've been looking at poetry for April and spring, so I recently read Robert Frost's "Blue-Butterfly Day." The last line: "Where wheels have freshly sliced the April mire."
