Poetry Friday - Still Summering

Amy Ludwig VanDerwater at The Poem Farm hosts our Poetry Friday today. Thanks for hosting, Amy! Hoping your sniffles disappear soon!

Our weather is back hot again after that brief cooldown that made me so ready to welcome autumn. However, I did write one other summer poem, this time for Karen Edmisten in the poem swap. Because it's in the nineties again, I thought it would be my last mention of summer, hoping it will bring luck for dipping temperatures now that I've said goodbye!

Today I am thinking of these September days that bring the terrible storms of hurricane season. I know a few have had to evacuate and hope that the dark predictions will be less than predicted.

  2. The repetition lends a certain urgency - or is it regret? - to the poem. Nicely done!

    1. Ha! Perhaps it is partly regret. Summer means many things that don't always happen in other seasons. Those are what I will miss. Thanks, Matt!

  4. A fulsome and clever farewell, Linda, and love the photos too. (Thanks also for the kind wishes for those of us who headed inland this week.) XO

  5. Cicada's pulsing sound

I like the way that rolls off my tongue!

  6. I do enjoy the saying goodbye repetition...reminds me a little bit of when I leave the house for mundane errands. I slowly make sure I have my water bottle, say goodbye to the spouse, find my phone and keys, say good bye to one or two kids....then say goodbye to the dog. The thing is...I don't really want to go.

  7. I like your bittersweet "goodbye to summer" poem Linda– Your round robin repetitions and your ringing echoing in the singing of the cicadas–which are still going strong in my neck of the woods, thanks!

    1. Thanks, Michelle, we now have the crickets & the cicadas seem to be only in parts of neighborhoods, fascinating.

  8. Linda, we are in sync. You-Still Summering and me-Summering Still! Like-minds! I really like your end-of-summer poem. I am wondering if you and Karen would not mind if I place this as one of the ending poems for the summer gallery.

  9. So much to love here! "the turnabout of days...the middle month of fun...cicadas pulsing sound." I do miss the sound of cicadas. As much as I love fall (truly my favorite season), your words make me cherish these last few days of summer. Headed to OK next week and another taste of warm weather (and maybe even some thunderstorms) before fall truly begins.

  10. The easy days of summer are a memory now. Wishing you cooler temps. We have 90's heat but no hurricane...yet!

    1. Thanks, I'm wishing that, too. Hope you do not get too much rain from this latest & terrible hurricane.

  11. So sad to say goodbye, especially as that means it's hurricane season. Great poem, though. I like the repetition, even if it made me sad.

  12. I hope your goodbye to summer works. I'm ready for fall temps. And isn't it fun to look back on the blessings of the past season as we head into the next.

  13. Thanks, Brenda and Kay. Yes, it's sad that it means this terrible hurricane time, but nice to remember the good times passed.

  14. I'm especially loving the romantic quality of these lines, Linda:
"I remember hues of June/ of flowers blooming ways" Summer in Florida is never romantic. Sometimes fun, but mostly just unbearably hot!

    1. This past June we did have a special burst of blooming & that makes my memory, Michelle. Your Florida, though hot, seems like that all the time when I visit. Thanks!

  15. I love the way you vary the repeating line here, Linda. As you noticed in my poem, I am ready to say goodbye to summer! Hope you have some technicolor fall days soon!

    1. We've had record heat these past days, the hurricane keeping our front from moving on. I am ready for that to go! Thanks, Catherine.

  16. That "turnabout of days!" I want to keep saying it and to write it. These three words could begin so many new ideas. There is a circular loveliness here, Linda. The whole world here is saying goodbye to summer - from the goldenrod in our pasture to the acorn eating deer out by our mailbox. Thank you. I am smiling toward autumn too... And I am better! Thank you! xx

    1. Perhaps it will be a picture book, Amy? We continue to have really hot days, but the cool is supposed to come next week, after the equinox! Hurrah! And Thanks!
