April Poetry Month - Day 8 - Summer Afternoons

Continuing with ideas from the book. This time, "Special Places".

             Remember to share:

Tabatha Yeatts has created a link to poems teachers and librarians can print for poetry month, titled "Poetry in The Halls". I'm grateful to be one of the poets!

Jama Rattigan has a post HERE with many poets' goals for April.

The Progressive Poem schedule can be found on the right!

Afternoon on The Roof

The town-grandparents’ house
offered a low, slanted roof,
the roof over the cellar door,
an invitation.
My friends and I kept
an old chair to boost us up.
On lazy summer afternoons,
prescribed rest time,
we’d lie there sky-gazing,
whisper-giggling at our jokes,
naming the cloud animals,
safe in our secret place.

  2. This one brought back memories of climbing up on our patio roof. It was peaceful up there, but there was also such a sense of power being high up over everything.

    1. Yes, you're right. Being able to actually "be" on the roof was powerful. Thanks for that added feeling, Jama.

  4. I probably said this already, and will probably say it again, but I love that your memories in these poems trigger experiences from my own past. We used to climb out my grandmother's attic window, across the neighbour's roof, and steal cherries from their tree.

    1. Oh, that's wonderful. I know that climbing out on a roof is a big deal, for us and recently Ingrid climbed out on theirs to help with Christmas lights. She was so excited she got to do it! Thanks, Cheriee!
