I'm flying east today to my sister-in-law's funeral. I won't be commenting much, but will read some of your posts, I'm sure. If you want to know more about her, I wrote a post last Saturday. We are saddened to lose her.
I thought I wouldn't post today, but a colleague shared this on her Facebook page. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world.” — Mister Rogers

Yes, this morning when I was talking with my 11yo about it, I told her about the police officers who had run to help and the marathon runners who had gone to give blood. We have to balance the picture. Love Mr. Rogers!

Mr. Rogers was an incredible person. This week has been hectic here and I missed your post about your sister-in-law. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sometimes when we lose someone so special and sensitive to others' needs, there is created such a void. Watch for the helpers again. I believe someone else steps up to the plate - someone who has been just watching her live her life so well will fill that void - another helper, if you will.

I've seen that quote everywhere over the past day, and I love it. While I wish we never had to see these tragedies, the stories of courage and kindness that come out of them are always inspiring.

I have not seen that quote, but I absolutely love it and will remember it always. I will one day when I need to, I will also share it with my girls. What a positive way to view a disaster because you are right: There is more light than darkness in this world. Thanks for posting today even during your own loss.
I have seen the Mr.Rogers quote several times in the last couple months. It's such a great way to look at the world. It is the outlook that I want to instill in my children and students. So sorry for your loss. Your sister-in-law sounds like a wonderful lady. Take care.
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your sister-in-law. I will be thinking of you and your family. The quote is beautiful and I shared the idea with my children after Sandy Hook. They are very comforting words.
