Poetry Friday Counting

Diane Mayr hosts Poetry Friday this week at her blog, Random Noodling. Join everyone who's sharing poetry this Friday! Thanks, Diane!

It seems I am doing my own 'random noodling' today, sharing a series of counting haiku, welcoming summer.

Counting Summer

one

one swallowtail swoops
a pink bloom waits--
connected bliss

two

two apple trees just so
anchors hold the hammock -
summer breeze nap

three

three linden trees bloom
aromas collide from the past. . .
new path

four

four kids flying
on playground swings--
laughing loud

five

five rabbits gather
nibble tender grass--
bunny picnic

six

six sprinkler stations
pop-up evening concert--
cooling drink

seven

temperatures soar
seven days of ninety degrees--
ice blocks slip and slide

eight

eight pairs of flip-flops
unpacked for summer--
heat metaphor

nine

nine mallards
glide pond shadows--
sun hideout

ten

ten ice cubes fill glasses
sun tea sweetened. . .
sipping summer

Linda, I am not sure which one of your haikus I like the best because they are all so wonderful. Bunny picnic is adorable and I am wondering if your granddaughters have a giggle for that one. I am ready to sip summer with you.

Thank you, Carol. I enjoyed writing this, know I might revise again, but I do like the memories captured this way.

A lovely concept for celebrating summer. I like the counting.

Dear Linda, whom I like to imagine "sipping summer"... these are lovely, and I had to smile at the flipflop line, because I live in them nearly year-round and having 8 pair might not be a stretch. :) xo

Thank you, since summer finally arrived, time to celebrate it!

Linda B said...

Thanks, Brenda, it was a fun exercise to see what could be in the counting.

Flip-flop creativity is hard to ignore lately, Irene. I do not live in them year round, but love them lately. Thank you!

Dear Linda,
YOU are the lucky bunny
with 4 children in frolic
and multiple bunnies to count!
(if you are the poem's narrator...)
The 90s heat - perhaps it hitchhiked
with you from Florida?

icy breezes to you with cool hugs...

Linda B said...

Thanks, Dori, it was fun to write, too.

Thanks, Margaret.

I love your response, Jan. I'm not sure about this 90's heat. We do have it every summer, but perhaps the length of time is right. Thank you for the wishes!

Keep capturing the memories and let us share them with you.

Oooh, love your summery counting poem! Sounds like ice is in order in your part of the world. (Too bad we can't average temperatures across regions. We're shivering under gray skies these days.)

Linda B said...

Thanks, Violet, I wish we could share too! We've already had our share of heat with little rain. It's not surprising, but summer has its challenges.

aha! you love sudoku with words too! LOVED the numbers and the words in concert with summer.

Linda B said...

Thanks, Linda, yes I do! It was great to see your number poem too!

LOVE these! I'm thinking...picture book?!?!!!!

Linda B said...

Wouldn't it be fun? Thanks, Mary Lee. Your comment makes me excited!

You hooked me with the first one -- that wonderful, shifting third line. I agree with Mary Lee (as usual!) -- this could be a very fun picture book and open to all kinds of artistic interpretation for the illustrator!

Linda B said...

Thank you, Keri. I need to work on it more, but this is exciting!

This is terrific, Linda! I think I like those kids flying on their swings the best, although that hammock sounds inviting, too!

Linda B said...

Thanks, Catherine. Swinging at a park in the summer is a delight, isn't it?

What a fun way to share haiku! These would make great mentors for writers. I'm in love with this line: one swallowtail swoops.

Oh, and a bunny picnic sounds like fun.

Thanks for sharing,
Cathy
