Yes, There Were Phantoms!

It's Poetry Friday, and Jone Rush MacCulloch is hosting HERE on her website.

AND, it's Halloween, with Jone's post filled with prompts and poems that reflect this day filled with treats and scares, costumes from those who find fun in new creations, or those who wear old favorites. Happy Halloween!

A few weeks ago, Jone shared a list of prompts that writers could use today, if they wished. She's shared them again, and I chose one!

          Whisper-Singing a Phantom Lullaby

Let me sing you a lullaby!

It tells of phantoms rushing by.

They’d heard a tale of special treats–

Earthling offerings, Oh, so sweet,

but only on a special night

when humans tried to be a fright,

creating changes in what they wear.

Their expectations, a cry of fear,

donning flashy costumes to pretend

to scare the neighbors, and maybe friends.

They didn’t know that others came –

phantoms, best at playing this game.

Though they were illusions, when nighttime ended;

many wondered why their treats had dwindled.

More than candy, sometimes a mask

was thought all ended in the trash.

Mothers were scolding the wee ones returning.

They’d eaten too much they had been yearning.

But the kids told how when cold breezes rushed by,

The candy nestled deeper, explaining the “why”!

Especially on Halloween, there may be fear,

And truth may be twisted when Phantoms appear.

It’s fun to sing a lullaby of things unforeseen

when sugar-loving phantoms create a scary scene

Mmmm the rhyme really suits the lullaby prompt, Linda. I'm looking forward to seeing some sugar-loving phantoms at my door in a few hours!

Thanks, Liz & Jan. Though it really needs some added work, I enjoyed creating a 'story' for today! Happy Halloween!

Such an evocative, atmospheric lullaby. I'll be on the lookout for hungry phantoms tonight, thanks to you. :)

Thanks, Jama & Robyn. I've been out raking leaves & there are a lot! I do wonder if phantoms will be about tonight? Love the toothbrush idea!

Hope you entertained some friendly phantoms… Thanks for the fun Halloween lullaby. We had many young adult phantoms in garb and taking in food and libations on our street yesterday, it was refreshing! 🦉🎃🍂

Aww... love this storysong. I could hear this being told/sung to little Phantoms the night before Trick-or-Treating. :)

This is really fun, Linda. On Thursday I had a great discussion with my 2nd grade friends about goblins, ghosts, and angels and whether they are real. I mostly listened!

We had lots of little phantoms last night (some big ones, too — I love when teens still trick-or-treat!) I love your lullaby, Linda. I must admit that at our house there's no wondering why the treats have dwindled. ;)

Thanks, Susan and Karen, I had some of those phantoms, too, but also some cute little clowns. Halloween is always a laugh!

By the end I was singing this lullaby. Thanks for trying a prompt. We had few phantoms last night.

That's one scary lullaby! Phantoms that steal my candy and mask?!? At least they're gentle phantoms that don't cause too many problems!

Linda, your phantom lullaby is a magical one with its rhyming and thoughtful word choices to give children a chill and thrill. While I could not visit the grands on Halloween, I did see videos and pictures. Little Lila was so excited as Cinderella who could not get enough goodies in her basket. These lines provide a chilland thrill depending on your perspective. My older grands were K-pop demon hunters (pop singers and a popular animated cartoon-like video for children, especially girls). I wonder if your grands are still Halloweening or setting up activities for little children.

PS: Jan has a great idea that you should create a card with your poem front and center each year. That would be fun to reread your card with poem each year at PF.

Again, thanks to Jone, Mary Lee, & Carol. Great to hear about your granddaughters, Carol, mine are older as you know, do varied things on Halloween instead of going out.
