Abuelos – by Pat Mora, illustrated by Amelia Lau Carling
             This story tells of a tradition that the author discovered in Santa Fe, New Mexico of a mid-winter masquerade where villages dress in scary costumes, bonfires are lit, and children are chased by Los Abuelos, reminding children of the need to mind their parents and learn their prayers. It is reminiscent of community traditions everywhere and the story told is that kind of scary that everyone likes. Young Amelia tells the story, and after some chasing and screaming around the bonfire, she discovers that one abuelo especially seems familiar, her Uncle! The night ends with wonderful food and dancing. It’s a story to share and find common parts with other celebrations, like Halloween.

Haiku Deck for Digilit Sunday

                Margaret Simon, of Reflections on The Teche, is trying to encourage people to link up for "Digilit Sunday" to share some things they're doing, or learning how to do, with technology. Thanks, Margaret!  And thanks to Kevin Hodgson for introducing me to my first Haiku Deck!

                Today, I'm sharing a poem I wrote during Laura Shovan's birthday month Pantone color poetry challenge. You can find out about it here. There are several who have shared poems using HaikuDeck, so I decided to try it out. I found it very easy, and while I could have used more pictures, I enjoyed the process. This poem was silly, and the color prompt was "silver bullet". You'll see the "why" of the poem when you read.

I used this picture with a poem earlier in the week, but the daffodils are so pretty, I thought I'd share it again.  A poet blogger, Michelle Barnes, at Today's Little Ditty often gives a prompt for which we are to respond in only  five words. This time the prompt was what poetry means to us personally. My response: "A poet's words linger longer." You can read the rest of the answers here. I'm celebrating April-Poetry Month!

Poetry Friday-Birthday Party at Michelle's

          Wow, there is a huge birthday celebration happening over at Today's Little Ditty, created by Michelle Barnes. There's cake, ice cream, miniature golf, and poetry of course. And, there are surprises! You'll need to visit Michelle to see who's arrived at the party and who are the special guests! Thanks for having us, Michelle!
          For April poetry, I've continued wandering around in poetry land, trying some new structures, reviewing some poetry anthologies, new and old, sharing some poetry lessons I've used in the past. My One Little Word this year is "wander", and it's been a fun thing to do. After reading poems from everyone who shares on Poetry Friday, I read and re-read, trying to "see" what each has done to make the poem. It's a delight each week!

Using A New App-and an old poem structure

    On Sundays, Margaret Simon of Reflections On The Teche, hosts a meme where people are sharing new tech or how they’re using tech with students: Digilit Sunday. I learned so much on Sunday that I had to start a document list of all the apps shared. Check it out if you’re interested, and/or join in to share. This is one of the apps shared by Kevin Hodgson (Kevin's Meandering Mind.) Last week we had snow, about six inches! Just tap on the screen to read each poem's lines.
