An Island Scrapbook-Dawn to Dusk on a barrier island - written and illustrated by Virginia Wright-Frierson
I haven't read many non-fiction PB books lately, but have read oodles of non-fiction reports from my students getting ready to share their unit research this Thursday at our Expo evening. Loads of good topics there!
However, I was searching for a book to help a student do some sea creature sketching and discovered this wonderful book.
It is a story of a day of a mother and daughter spending time, as the title says, from dawn to dusk on their barrier island. They explore the flora and fauna everywhere, from pond to maritime forest to sea, carrying their paints and brushes along to capture the beauty. There are a number of photographs included, too. The story text tells the mother/daughter story while the illustrations are filled with explanations and labeled sketches throughout. It's a beautiful story to read aloud a bit at a time from painting the sunrise to watching baby sea turtles emerge from their eggs at sunset. And it could be used as a mentor text for numerous kinds of field journal pages/lessons.

What a beautiful book! I love the cover. It reminds me of the design of Feathers: Not Just for Flying by Melissa Steward. I will definitely need to check it out. It would be great for my literary/creative nonfiction unit.

I haven't heard of this book either, but now I'm intrigued! Might need to read it with my eyes closed and picture myself on the beach vs. this frigid weather! Thanks for sharing :)
