Day Twenty-Two of the Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Challenge. Tweet at #SOL15

If you've remembered yesterday, Saturday, and I didn't have much that I had to do, but lots that I wanted to do, even cleaning, and I wrote that I've worked hard that past few weeks and weekends getting ready for new units with my students, writing evals and then conferences. So I ran a few errands, finished up with the minor grocery shopping and planned to go home before lunch and leisurely write and read. I didn't. 
And the reason for the title is that my son, daughter-in-law and grandson have been in the mountains skiing with friends all week during their spring break. They live in Lubbock, Texas. I talked with them, but didn't expect to see them at all. They fly sometimes, but this time they caravanned with friends and drove up. Last night my son called to tell me they were having car trouble. This morning I didn't hear anything so thought they must have gone on home. They hadn't. The car was still in trouble and mechanics could not figure it out. So, they called me, I picked them up, we had lunch together, and then I drove them to the airport to pick up a rental car. I had the wonderful gift of seeing them for about three hours, not planned, serendipity, very fun. Unfortunately, they had to leave their car behind. And that's another story.
And the slice today tasted quite different, definitely a little bit saltier.
The whipped cream on top is to get to see my grandson, now taller than me. And then, to eat dinner with my daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters tonight, a day with family that I hadn't counted on.

So glad you had that whipped cream on top of a saltier than expected slice! So fun to see family even if the circumstances were less than ideal for them. And then dinner with daughter, sil, and those wonderful grand girls!
Life is often unexpected. I am sure that they were glad that you could rescue them and spend time with them. It is lucky you did not have much planned.

An unexpected salty slice with whipped cream on top....I suspect it was a meant to be family slice of fife. You grabbed it and that is the wonderful part of it all.
I'm sorry that the car broke down, but great for you to get to see them! Always fun to have a great something that you weren't expecting!

I love your analogy of the taste of a slice. Hadn't thought of that "obvious connection." Love those unexpected, pleasant surprises.

An unplanned surprise arising from a mechanical failure. How wonderful that you got to spend some unexpected time with your family. A perfect way to spend part of a quiet weekend.

I am sorry for the worry. Glad about the family time. Bittersweet time - kids grow so fast. May there be more whipped cream than salt.
What a treat to see your son and grandson, even though the reasons were not ideal. At least the car trouble happened where you could reach them and assist instead of them being stranded on a highway no where near family or friends.
What a wonderful turn of events. Sometimes the unexpected may be even better than the planned. I hope that you will get your quiet reading and writing time sooner than later. Maybe during an unexpected pocket of free time.

They kind of limped down from the mountains, losing fluids all the way, but the mechanics still couldn't find a solution. I am glad they weren't still two hours away. My car isn't equipped for a winter mountain drive. It was great to see them for sure.

What a gift, what a treasure...I understand the "bit saltier"...truly, such a serendipitous turn of events, to get these three hours with them, unexpectedly!

Well, it helped, Kim, but the car is still at the shop, ugh! We did have fun for those few hours.
