Poetry Friday - Change Needed

Poetry Friday is hosted by Margaret Simon at Reflections on The Teche, whom I believe just finished her school year! She shares a marvelous collaboration with her nephew today. Visit Margaret for all the links to beautiful poetic things.

We had a cold wave with rain arrive at the end of last week, the heat was turned on again, and it was dark as winter evenings all day on Saturday. I'll say it again. Denver can always use the rain, but a temperature in the forties is too cold for May. I wrote this poem over the weekend. I'm happy to say that more than the screen is open now. It's warming up again!

Determined

I know, I know, I need a sweater.
Cold air spools in through the back screen door,
opened to welcome spring.
The winter party has returned.
But I have heard those geese vees flying south,
and I have heard robins cheer me awake.
The porch furniture sits uncovered,
ready for iced tea and talk.
Trees are dressed in that gauzy green,
each wistful for the once-upon-a-time spring.
The door stays open.
I’m turning the page.

"Trees are dressed in that gauzy green,
each wistful for the once-upon-a-time spring."
This is lovely.

Thanks, Jone. I love that green haze that appears from trees as one looks down the street.

I'd love to come to your porch for iced tea and talk, Linda! Glad to hear the chill is abating. :-)

Dear Linda, how much do I love your use of "spools" ?? Glad it's warming up again, and how I can relate to the zigzaggity weather... it does keep it interesting, doesn't it? And now you have a lovely new poem. xo

Yes, the warm temps are back, perhaps this time to stay! Thanks, Tabatha, would love to have you over!

I love this! What a gorgeous, wistful, determined poem. So many little combinations of words sang for me. I think this would be my fave;
But I have heard those geese vees flying south.

Gauzy green and your opened door, can I come by? I'd love to sit outside and have some tea with you.

Yes! The good things are the poem and the rain! Our weather is often interesting. Thanks, Irene.

I love all those gorgeous "e" sounds. Nicely done, Linda.

I've heard on the seasonal fashion circuits that "gauzy green" never goes out of style! Yet, I have a different problem, Linda. I go out thinking there's no way I'll need a jacket... until I step into through any shop door and get blasted by the AC. :/

What a lovely poem! It's been colder and wetter than normal around here too. Hope you've turned that page for all of us. :)

"I'm turning the page" is a fact, a warning and preparation! Love that ending!

I, too, love the poetry of this line: "Trees are dressed in that gauzy green" - just perfect. I hope warm weather and porch time comes your way soon, Linda - you are ready for it!!!

Thank you, Dori.

Love your fashion comment, Michelle, must be so! Yes, the AC does make a difference sometime, too.

Thanks, Jama, warm today but the next week looks very promising.

Thanks, Donna, I really felt like this past weekend was "enough already".

I am ready for all those good things we do "outdoors"! We're headed for the beach in a week, hoping to return to summer weather! Thanks, Tara.

Yes! I checked the weather here and it's still going down to the 50s at night for the next week. I need to plant my kale. :-) When?? LOL All the heat is focused on India apparently.

Linda B said...

We are still cool in the evenings, too! I think you can still plant the greens!

Glad that your winter party was brief! Love your title "Determined" and that next-to-last line: "The door stays open." Happy return of spring!

Linda B said...

Thanks, Ramona, yes, that party is over, now for the summer celebration.

Aww, hopefully spring will soon feel obliged to stay. Love how your poem stays hopeful.

Your post reminds me of my daughter's Facebook update this morning - a picture of her kids eating pancakes with the caption "Pancake breakfast on a snow day." Yes, it snowed in northern B.C. overnight (but also Alberta, to help the wildfire-fighters, so it's not all bad).

Thanks, Violet. I saw that a cold front was moving through, and wondered about the fire. That's good news, Violet! Not so great for the daughter & family! We haven't received much news about the fire recently.

Thanks, Mary Lee. Lucky, too, the warm weather is back!

I love the repetition of "I know, I know." I can picture the cold air spooling in through the back screen door--the image is so perfect it gives me chills! Hope spring has arrived today!

Thanks, JoAnn, and yes, yesterday & today are in the 80's! Changes, changes! I'm glad I stood firm (tee hee)!
