Poetry Friday - Special Words

Laura Shovan hosts today sharing some poems from her poet-in-residence experience with third graders writing about food and pockets! You can find her here. Thanks, Laura.

I'm leaving for the beach Saturday morning, will be sketching & writing & soaking it all up, days I look forward to every year. I'll read all your posts in the next few days! My family joins me later in the week.

I promised my granddaughter Ingrid that I would post her end-of-year poem she wrote in her class. Her teacher wanted students to write who they are NOW, at this end of the year. They read them aloud to the audience of parents, bringing tears, I'm sure.

I like to call Ingrid and her younger sister, Imogene, "mighty girls". Both are athletic, now Ingrid playing softball this summer while Imi continues in gymnastics. They recently completed a rock-climbing series of lessons, hope to continue later in the summer. It's great to see them learning how strong they can be in their chosen sports. Here's Ingrid's baseball pic.

Where I’m From Poem
By: Ingrid Krahling

I am from softballs coming down the field
from Adidas and Patagonia
I am from the neighborhood kids playing on bikes
enjoying, interesting as we walk through the streets we hear dogs barking and birds chirping
I am from trees
the amazing tall nature thing
I’m from Christmas at grandma's and compassion from Krahling and Baie
I’m from the weekends in winter and where we go skiing and summers at the beach
From if you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all and get the thing done that you need to get done and then have fun.
I’m from courage. being brave
I’m from Denver Colorado French, Dutch, Norwegian
pasta, bread
from my dad getting an award and hanging it up.

  1. Linda, please tell Ingrid that not only is she a special young girl, an athlete, and now a young poet. Her poem is lovely and a fine example of a Where I'm From Poem. Enjoy your beach vacation because I know it not only allows you to live totally in the moment but keep those thoughts within you for months to come.

  4. Wow, Linda! Ingrid’s poem is beautiful, especially as a third grader. Being from compassion and courage ... she is definitely her grandma’s girl. My granddaughter is Ingrid’s age, and she also writes amazing poetry. What a gift when they discover the wonder of words! Enjoy your wonderful beach time, friend.

  5. Love Ingrid's poem and photo (she's grown so tall!). There is a wonderful sense of confidence along with the compassion, courage, great sensory details and love of time spent with family. Also like the sense of pride in her father's accomplishment, and of course, hooray for pasta and bread!

  9. Oh, my goodness. This is beyond precious. This needs to be presented to her children someday. I love how much of her past she has gathered up in her now...there is also a clear direction. You are one most fortunate grandmother. I aspire to this someday.

  12. A strong body, a brave spirit, and a poet's heart. I can't think of a better combination to take on the world and make it better just by being in it. Oh Linda, you must be so proud!

  16. Finally I've arrived at my beach, after a nice walk, ready to sit to read your wonderful comments, Michelle B., Robyn, Kay & Michelle K. Thank you very much. Ingrid will feel so good reading what you have to say about her poem. I am proud of her always and happy she loved writing this poem, along with playing softball!

  17. Special words, indeed, Linda!
My favorite poetic pearl is "if you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all" - if only adults would heed this directive! You are a brave and talented poet, Ingrid. Brava! =)

  18. Nice! I love the idea of making it a snapshot. You could have the kids write one in August and one in May.

  19. What an amazing poem! I can imagine having students write Where I'm From Poems at the beginning of the school year. It would be a brilliant way to get to know more about them.
Hope you are enjoying your time at the beach!

    1. Thanks, Ruth & Cheriee. I am at the beach & just saw your comments. Yes, having students do this is a fun way to begin to know them at the first of the year, but also for them to compare what they write with an end-of-year poem, too. Ingrid shows her strong feelings for being kind here, something I know about her well.

  21. Linda! You must tell me how you added the ability to do Replies to comments on Blogger. I can't figure it out! (But don't let me bother you while you're at the beach. It can wait.) :)

  22. So much to love in Ingrid's poem! I'm from "get the thing done that you need to get done and then have fun." I've never heard this saying, but it's a good one. It's hard to believe how fast your granddaughters are growing up. Love that they are mighty girls!
