Poetry Friday - The Warmth of Poetry

Poetry Friday is with Catherine Flynn HERE at her website, https://readingtothecore.com/ with the answer you will love!  Thanks for hosting, Catherine!
I enjoy celebrating winter in numerous ways, among them getting out the heavier comforter for my bed. Our weather was predicted well below freezing, and flurries started as I went to bed last Monday. I knew I'd see a sparkling blanket when I rose in the morning.

I bought this in early 2021 when it was published, have read through it, and picked it up when I wanted some comfort during these troubled times. The poems are loving and caring, by such special writers as Ted Kooser, Jane Hirshfield, Amanda Gorman, Joy Harjo, Naomi Shihab Nye, Ross Gay, Tracy K. Smith, and Ellen Bass, whose poem I'm sharing today. Best wishes to everyone during this holiday season, wherever you find a poem in time of need.
There are invitations for writing throughout the book, and reading group questions and topics for discussion in the back.

Getting Into Bed On A December Night

  2. Such a lovely little book! Thank you for sharing it, Linda, and for sharing your sparkling blanket. (No sparkle here...just now saying goodbye to the most brilliant crimson leaves!) xo

  3. Now sparkling blanket here yet, either, but I'm expecting it any day. However, it's chilly and I do slip under my quilt to stay warm at night. Thanks for the book recommendation. I think I'll get it.

  5. I am delighting in HOW TO LOVE THE WORLD this year too. I've been sitting with a few of the poems in it each week (had not gotten to p.143 yet ;) ). What a great metaphor she crafted - the quilt and pages of a love letter! Thank you!

  6. Love the poem, Linda. Cozying up in a nice blanket is one of my favorite things to do. We have blankets of white here. I'm keeping warm thinking of your poem and about what type of poetry brings me the most comfort. I think it's probably something humorous! We all need to smile more. Thanks - Carol.

  10. Thank you for this, Linda--I would buy this book just for the gorgeous cover, but I see that it's also the perfect gift for some folks I know who are having trouble maintaining gratitude and hope in a tumultuous world (looking at you, Dad!). The Ellen Bass poem is perfection.

  13. I love this book. The Ellen Bass poem is a great connection to warmer covers! I'm totally with you on getting out the heavier comforters -- Denver's frigid weather made its way to Ohio late last week. Something about heavy bedding in the winter helps me sleep so much better (and warmer!).
