Poetry Friday - Whispering

It's Poetry Friday, and Patricia J. Franz is hosting HERE on her website, Reverie. She's sharing a tanka about her own walk in nature. It's lovely to be there along with her!

The trees are saying goodbye this past week, in a windy fury, but many still remain. I raked a top layer, filled four bags for our leaf drop. The city has numerous sites where we can take the leaves, and they will be made into mulch that can be picked up in the spring.

my old cottonwood - still hanging on to its leaves,
and still mostly green

part of my backyard, and the common space that gives me more leaves

While I raked and bagged, I imagined the trees whispering. Timing has taken the sprinklers out of service, but we have stayed mild and so, so dry. When I've read books about the science of trees, like
The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate: Discoveries from a Secret World
by Peter Wohlleben,
they discuss how trees 'talk' to those near, sending moisture to those in need. So, I'm dreaming up the conversations—sometimes silly, or not-so-much—but it's great to be out with them.

  1. Oh, so much better than the news. Timeless existence, survival, beauty. I love my friends and will miss them too. So glad you got out and listened. They are such good storytellers.

  2. Yes! I'll take tree whisperings everyday. Thank you, Linda! (Our trees have a long way to go before being bare!) xo

  3. I love tree whisperings -- helping one another get ready for winter. Would that our human whisperings were so kind! Our CO son is swooning over his first full autumn of color. Your trees must be the ones he sees near him. Beautiful!

  4. Whispering is such a powerful word. As soon as I read your title, I started reading in a hushed voice in my head! What a wonderful idea to eavesdrop on trees. : )

  5. I'm sure I've shared this before, but the reason I chose this home to be in the city & closer to my daughter & her family was the abundance of trees. The tree's leaves bring lots of raking, yet still they comfort. Thanks, Linda, Irene, & Patricia!

  7. Thanks for this loveliness today, Linda, so so so much better than the news. Enjoyed seeing your trees and hearing your thoughts and reading your poem about tree whispers. I need to read that tree book too. :)

    1. Thanks, Jama, happy you enjoyed my "outside" world! Hope you can get to read the book sometime. Scientists are discovering more and more about things in nature, things we never imagined years ago. It's wonderful!

  8. Nice! I love the whispering trees, and that they are "better than the news." You have taken advantage of this year's Write Out. The leaves are gorgeous.

  12. The trees were doing a lot of whispering and letting go this week. Your haiku captures the changing season so well.

  13. Yes yes no no no--"Leavesdropping," surely! Love it, Linda. And let's face it, practically everything is better than the news these days. I love the views of your place, your cottonwood!

  14. I love trees so much! Your yard is lovely with them but leaves fall and someone has to take or blow them. Nice that you gather them and take them to be mulched. It gives you time to eavesdrop. Hope you had a fun summer.
