Poetry Friday - Finding Time

It's Poetry Friday, and Linda Mitchell is hosting on her website here! She's sharing some beautiful quotes about children, ones that would be so nice to share widely! Thanks for hosting, Linda!

I'm looking forward to reading your posts, what you're sharing! It's been a while!

Hi Everyone, I still feel very busy. Home and family, plus work at the bookstore have claimed my days for a long time. Like many of you, I'm sure, I'm also invested in fighting our government's overreach. That, too, takes more time. I am trying to get back in some kind of groove with writing. I haven't even read very much!

One thing I haven't stopped is walking out, celebrating all the nature surrounding me as I go. This time, I've been watching the trees. Our weather has been so strange, a warm winter that set records and disappointed skiers and ski resorts, and now, so little rain. I saw it rain last week at the bookstore, but just about a mile south where I live, not a drop! My daughter and family had a hailstorm do big damage to their newly planted garden and tree leaves, but again, nothing in my area. We're in a severe drought, so much of the time I've been closely watching the trees, hoping they would leaf out as usual, and they have. The company that takes care of mine has been out a few times, checking, and deep-root watering. So far, they appear okay.

Here are a few photos of trees I see while out, both in my own yard and in the neighborhood. I live in a neighborhood filled with trees. Lucky me!

Trees branch,

seeking light and strength,

Like people.

  1. Hi Linda, love your tree-focused post–and we definitely both need "light and strength!" That tree with the big eye hole seems like it's asking for a poem… I walk everyday too and appreciate our trees. Perhaps Chicago can send you some rain, we've had some heavy downpours here. Enjoy the trees as they continue to fill, and the summer, thanks! ☺️ 🦋🐝

    1. That particular tree is so intriguing, and also requires more study. I wish you could send some rain, but sadly the weather bypasses us on to you, not the other way! Thanks, Michelle!

  2. Thank you for your energies toward reigning in our government. I'm sorry it's taking time away from your writing...but what material to someday write from! I just know you'll do that. I love the idea of branching, the verb, as a way to seek light and strength. Here's to more branching among us!

    1. Sometimes it feels as if we need to do more & more, Linda. Yes, the branching (connections) are important! Thanks, Linda

  3. Glad your trees are surviving the drought thus far and that you've been out enjoying nature. Thanks for your poem and the lovely photos -- interesting to see all the different branch patterns. :) You're so right about people also needing light and strength in these tough times.

    1. So far, and am hopeful about the trees, Jama. We have rain predicted for Sunday or Monday! I've read several books about a tree's life, and they help each other in numerous ways! Suddenly I saw that connection which I wish for every person, branches to hold on to! Thank you!

    1. Thanks, Irene! I am lucky to be in a place that's older and has many trees. The city takes care of theirs, too!

  7. Linda, it is good to see you back with the community. While you have no rain, last night while many in my community were at the clubhouse enjoying each other's conversations, a terrific downpour blew out the electricity for the entire night. I did see a rainbow. Your walk through the variety of trees is lovely and your haiku uses the word branch as a verb keeping the motion of walking intact. "Like people is a good comparison. I like learning about your charitable work that is so generous.

  8. Hi, Linda. It is so good to "hear" from you. We were in Fort Collins and did some hiking at the end of May while visiting our son. It is so very dry in your area. Utah seems even worse. I wrote about water this week because it's so important that we all conserve. I hope you are enjoying all your busyness. I'd love to find a volunteer gig that I could share my time with - so far, in the rural Northwoods of WI, I have not found a good fit. I envy your work at the bookstore.

    1. And, thank you for dropping by, Carol. I have had problems connecting with your blog in the past, have to tell my Xfinity to let me in for an hour! This time I couldn't find a way to comment, and enjoyed catching up with what you're up to. Yes, it's so dry, and must be frightening for those with real fire possibilities.

  10. Lucky you, indeed, Linda! The trees in your area are beautiful, as is your poem. I enjoyed the last line "like people," speaking to the strength we all are reaching for in chaotic times:) Thanks for sharing your photos and poetry with us during this busy time of life!
