It's Poetry Friday, and Carol Varsalona is hosting on her website, Beyond Literacy Link, here! She's welcoming Lady Autumn. Be sure to take a look and know the joy of those colors! Then, visit others who are sharing, too!
Among all the other egregious things happening in the U.S., I was recently alarmed by a Pen America article at the list of books being banned in both schools and libraries. Here's the fifty-two most banned in schools since 2021. FYI - Banned Book Week is October 4 - 10. https://pen.org/top-52-banned-books-since-2021/
I'm sharing today that sometimes my imagination is wild when I go out walking! Here's a recent example!
What Happens!
I’m out for a stroll.
What I don’t see
won’t hurt me,
will it?
Then imagination runs wild;
I am beguiled
By what I take
For a terrifying snake.
But looking again,
find a broken limb.
Inside I laugh
At such a gaffe,
Keep walking along,
With a daydream song

Love the humor in your poem, especially the word choice "beguiled" and the rhymes. Thank you for the much-needed lift!!!
Linda, your poem is pure fun, especially with the rhymes. Enjoy your walks and bring the joy of the upcoming season right into your poetry, my friend.
Thank you, Mona & Carol! My walks take me for a ride wherever I want, enjoying the beautiful things in nature, & imagining all kinds of silly things! It really is a "breath of fresh air"!
That branch does look like a snake! I was similarly fooled years ago in our driveway. Thanks for your poem which made me smile at the memory (of relief). :)
That is one terrifying snake! (I would have been fooled, too!) As for the banned book list...seems like a pretty good must-read list. If they can't access those books in school, I hope good readers make it their mission to read through all of them from the public library!
Oh my, Jama, you, too? Thanks for telling me, & glad I made you smile!
Thanks, Mary Lee, sorry so late, have spent some time (& lunch) with one of my granddaughters today. Yes, a 'must-read' list, & the library is one answer, though evidently some of them are being pressured about removing books, too!
Linda, I remain ever grateful that book banning is not a thing in Australia. It has always baffled me how pervasive it is in America. Walking is the perfect distraction to a discombobulated world and its head scratching happenings. Your poem captures perfectly what can happen when we commit to the moment we are in. Solvitur ambulando!
Oh, my goodness...I love the woods and I see imaginary snakes everywhere! It's crazy. I need to let go of my fear and just walk! Your poem makes me giggle...it touches my buttons in all the good ways.
Thanks for coming by, Alan, I agree about the banning, wonder why people are so concerned about a book's influence? Yes to getting outside, and imagining, too!
We do need to "watch out", as you do, Linda, but the percentage of snakes being around is very low, I keep telling myself! Thanks for sharing what happens to you, too!
What a fetching, sly, wonderful poem, Linda! :0) Always on the lookout for snakes around here, too. Thank you as well for the banned books info, and for your everyday life which stands up against that assault, showing a better way.
Oh gosh, Linda! I do the same thing on my walks in the forest. I'm always seeing black bears from a distance or on the periphery... that thankfully become tree stumps when I get closer. Very fun poem!
How charming! I'm snake-phobic, so I tend to see them coiled in the middle of the road or lying across the bike path too. Walk and wonder, YES!
Thanks, Robyn, Patricia, & Heidi, it's great to know I'm not alone! Have a nice Sunday!
Oh, my gosh, that "snake" does look like a snake! Love laugh/gaffe. And the dreaminess of that last line is beautiful.
Thanks, Denise, I am continually imagining whenever I go out, sometimes, like this today, it's a bit frightening! : )
I think we've all been through a similar scare, Linda! I'm happy your encounter was just with a broken limb. :)
Oh, the book banning is beyond maddening!
Thanks, Karen, glad to read you understand, & yes, boo to the book banning!
Hi Linda, it's now October & I'm behind with appreciations for your Shout Out against Book Banning. That would have been a fat creature, had it not be a stick! More like a log... so big. Such a delightful good turn in the poem. Wishing you all the best autumn walks. Your fan, JAN
