Wednesday-Lots Happening

One of the poets doing something special this month is Laura Shovan, of AuthorAmok. She's putting on party clothes this month and inviting others to write and share poetry connected in some way to clothing, and today is my day to visit. Come on over to see what I'm writing about pockets! Thanks to Laura for inviting me!

For this wonderful month of April, Poetry month, I've made the goal to write haiku and haiku-related poems. It's been rewarding to write something new every day.
I'm also happy that some of us are sharing on twitter with the hashtag #DigiPoetry, created by Margaret Simon, of Reflections on The Teche. You're welcome to join us. Find the many Poetry Month offerings rounded up by Jama Rattigan at Jama's Alphabet Soup.

SOLC # 13 & Poetry Friday collide - Fri. the 13th trick!

Day Thirteen of the Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Challenge. I'm also blogging with students at Linda & Jonathan's Class Blog           Tweet at #SOL15
Thanks to Tara, Dana, Anna, Betsy, Beth and Stacey for keeping on!

One of my nicest poetry prompters is Laura Shovan, on her way to publishing a middle school verse novel, and celebrating her birthday month each year with a poetic challenge. This year, it was all about sounds, one of the sweetest devices in poetry, if you can manage them. Today Laura is our host for Poetry Friday! She blogs at Author Amok where you can find all the other wonderful Poetry Friday writers.  Thanks for hosting, Laura.

I wrote a poem today for one of my grandfathers. Thinking of and writing about him connects me to today, Friday the 13th, this Poetry Friday. My grandfather was superstitious to the degree that I listened carefully to his tales and believed them. Sometimes actions show that I still do. Spilled salt, over the left shoulder. Never walk under a ladder.

I had a terrific week in a classroom of 4th and 5th grade aged students. They are wonderful students, and it was a joy to work with them. I enjoyed working with my colleagues, too. But I, like all teachers on Friday, am tired! My week was filled with student interactions, lunch meetings with various grade-level groups, and a few individual meetings. And the week began with my granddaughter Ingrid's fifth birthday dinner Monday evening. She had a special birthday, a palindrome, 4-14-14. Today is the final day of that phenomenon this week, 4-19-14.
One text to celebrate: my grandson Carter, a 7th grade, was invited into the National Honor Society. I bet he's pleased, and I am proud of him.
I am guest posting today with Laura Shovan here at her blog, Author Amok, sharing my own "source" poem.
I reviewed Meenoo Rami's new book, Thrive here. If you don't know the book, you should. It's terrific.
I know it's spring, the meadowlarks are back at school. My school, just minutes away, is more on the prairie edge and it backs onto a wetlands. When I hear that sweet sound, I know spring has arrived. Click on the video and enjoy!

Sweet Valentine Poetry Friday Here

Welcome to sweet Valentine’s Day Poetry Friday:

A little laughter:

Another Saint

As great as Valentine.

A little sugar: “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.”

A little romance: Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs.  - William Shakespeare

And a few hugs from me!  Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!
