Welcoming Winter, Celebrating Light

Amazing things happen in our final week before the vacation begins: our holiday walk on Monday, two good work days on Tuesday and Wednesday, the staff party, the students' breakfast on Thursday, and the Celebration of Light.  I am also grateful for the wonderful parent support I've received from the parents of my new students. 

   There are a variety of special days that families celebrate this time of year, and some do not celebrate any holiday; however, we do know that light is important in every life. Every year, each class and group (like the trip teachers, math and music teachers, etc.) create a display of some kind that shows various ways that something or someone lights up our lives. Today is the last day of fall, and then the winter solstice, a special day to many throughout the world. Here are a few pictures of different ways some of the classes shared who or what brought light into their lives.

My students created a box home sculpture, lit them, and wrote how their homes provided light in their lives.

A Sunny Slice to Share

               

The Tuesday Slice of Life is hosted by the Two WritingTeachers blog.  I'm getting excited about March, slicing every.single.day!  Are you?  

I thought I was going to take a little bit of time, and share this slideshow from the morning of the final day of school before the winter break.  I struggled with how to embed the slideshow although I've done it before.  Argh! I need a brain compartment just for techie stuff! And that is part of my slicing today, I do spend quite a bit of time figuring out some things, and I enjoy it, but it does take time. And often the time is worth it!

              Years ago we at school wanted to find a way to celebrate all our students' holidays at this time of year.  Although some of their most important holidays don't always occur in December, most of them do have connections to the specialness of light in some way.  Some classrooms focus on learning about all kinds of celebrations, and others focus on what metaphorically brings light into our lives, but everyone creates a display in the classrooms, small offices, library, and so on that connects to light.
