It's April, Poetry Month

          For opening day:  "Poets are like baseball pitchers.  Both have their moments.  The intervals are the tough things."

         Snow is in the forecast for next Tuesday!  It was 74 degrees today, and the windows were open, the breezes were mild.  

   A little thought today:

              Slumbering winter
              Like January's embers
              Warming, but still aglow.

               Waking in April
               Will not leave so easily
               Pull out the mittens

A Poem From One Word

A most creative Robyn Hood Black is our host today for Poetry Friday. Check all the posts here for this first Friday of Poetry Month!

     I like writing from the Word of the Month at  David Harrison's blog.  I thought I'd share today what I wrote for March's word, snake. This particular word brought numerous poems and much conversation.  
             
                I've started a writer's support group with colleagues at school and they gave me feedback for the poem, too, but the word snake again brought up all kinds of responses from the group.  Interesting how one word can be so charged emotionally.  If you're interested, search the site to find the Word of the Month and you'll find the link.  The word for April is fragrance.  

                 Here is my poem for snake:

Learning

My mother shuddered when hearing “snake”. 

But I learned that it didn’t have to be bad,

in fact, the first one I met

face to face

(really,

face to face)

was a large black snake.

One More Piece of Moon Love

 Poetry Month

 

         Our most recent snowfall hit the same time as the first weekend of spring and a full moon!  I couldn't help but write again about the moon, although Karla Kuskin tells us to "Write About A Radish".

Hey!

Check out that moon.

It’s so-o-o big.

It’s like, like exciting

to see.

Moonlight over Denver

at twenty degrees—more than cool.

It’s winter bright,

orangeless.

Sleep-stealing is its goal.

I’ll put on the teapot,

and get ready to gaze.
