Poetry Friday - Make A Choice

 Welcome to Poetry Friday!

FYI - I will be at the bookstore until 6 pm, often don't get home until close to 7. Will start reading in the evening!

I'm looking forward to your posts!

Though I'm posting this on Leap Day, it's time to "March" on! When I signed up for this date, I thought I would write about spring. Yet, with the continuing turmoil in the world, I thought I'd prefer to write about choices. How are you choosing to change the world, perhaps only in 'your' world? It's hard to see the many needs and wonder if one little person can affect them. I imagine ripples spreading when one stone is thrown. Is it true? Can one stone make a difference? I hope that it can!

Acrostic Moment

Could you take a moment now,

Hasten to own a world of wishes

Overlook the list--laundry, dusting, working late--

Install ‘be kind’ and ‘listen well’?

Could you look beyond and fasten

Everyone’s lives to part of yours?

  1. Thanks for your caring thoughts and "Choice" acrostic. All the chaos in the world does feel overwhelming much of the time, but I agree with your ripples on the water analogy. Each person can make a difference; to be kind and listen well are conscious choices we can, and should make every day. We are all interconnected. As a wise man once said, "Every journey begins with a single step." Thanks for hosting this week, and Happy March!

  2. "a world of wishes" What a beautiful idea. I have to admit that I struggle to feel like I'm making a difference. I believe I am. I aim to. And, at the same time, the daily grind of difficulty that people around me have can really impact how I'm seeing and feeling about the world. There is so much suffering. I have thought a lot about the idea of joy as resistance and try to tap into that as much as I can. Poetry Friday is a tremendous boost of art and community for me. I am grateful.

  3. I've been thinking a lot lately about my choices, and questioning them. How can I do more? I love those final two lines and the implicit challenge to connect. Thanks so much for hosting this week!

  4. Fasten our lives, good idea, and good to ponder and put into action. Thanks for your sensitive and call to action poem Linda, and thanks for hosting us this week too! Happy March, and Marching on…

  5. Thanks for hosting Linda and for the very pertinent reminder about the choices we have to 'Overlook the list' and choose to focus on what is really important.

  6. Thanks for hosting, Linda, and for reminding us how many choices we have - and how many we need to recognize. An important point!

  7. Your acrostic poem is one of genuine substance, Linda. Your analogy to the casting of a stone into water is also most apt. My dear uncle always urged me to be quietly subversive and I try to honour that ideal every day-stir the pot! Choice means we can be makers or breakers- and I know what my choice is every single time. Thank you this timely reminder.

  8. I love the image of ripples of kindness spreading from one stone--and fastening others' lives to our own. Thanks for encouraging our choices--and for hosting today!

  9. Thank you for hosting and offering us reassurance that we can make a difference :) This evening, I made sure a stranger could have a parking space, which was very small but every little thing might be a big thing to someone else. xo

  10. I love that last line, Linda. Indeed, we do need to fasten our lives to others, and stop looking so much to self. And the funny thing is that, in spreading kindness, we often reap a reward of joy. Thank-you for hosting us - and making a difference with kindness.

  11. Thank you, Linda - yes to your whole poem, especially that last line, as others have noted! And, I believe in the ripples, too. Much appreciation for your sensitivity & generous spirit - and for hosting this week!

  12. Linda, your post and poem is the one ripple in the ocean that reaches out to everyone here. Can we make a difference? I believe so in our own communities if we believe in the power of together action. I will send you my blog post probably tomorrow as I just finished sending a second poem to Janet W. and Sylvia V. for their Think Poetry! Project. I am juggling too many balls while still trying to recuperate from the respiratory/sinus infection. Thank you for hosting with your constant cheer.

  15. I love the call to action in your acrostic, Linda. What can I do to make the world a better place? My go-to is humor. Your go-to is always kindness and optimism. I appreciate you for that. Thank you for hosting. :)

  17. "fasten everyone's lives to part of yours" is a wonderful line. Something about the word "fasten" gets to me. For the last two weeks my daughter has been on the legislative floor fighting against a bill that will place her boss in the governor's office, essentially giving the governor control over the public defenders in our state. She's a fighter but the bill went through because of the puppetry that is politics. I am sorry she lost the fight but so proud that she is who she is.

  18. Thank you for hosting us, Linda, and for reminding us that we DO have daily choices. I'm fascinated by your word choices, noticing "hasten, listen, fasten"--olde fashionede words for very basic human actions.

  19. Thanks for hosting us and I absolutely believe that every small positive action builds towards a greater good. We can't wait until we think we have enough in us to solve the huge problems. We have to do what we can right here, right now.
